Alcoa achieves two year safety record

Alcoa Australia Rolled Products at Yennora has just reached the significant milestone of two years without anyone needing to take a day or more off work for a work-related injury.

There are 365 employees at Alcoa’s Yennora operation and the Lost Work Day safety record makes it one of the safest manufacturing workplaces in Australia.

To put the achievement in perspective approximately 3% of the general Australian workforce took a day or more off for a work-related injury during the 2005/06 financial year.

Location Manager John Costley said: “Operating in a safe, responsible manner which respects the environment and the health of our employees, our customers and the communities where we operate is a worldwide Alcoa policy.

“We will not compromise environmental, health or safety values for profit or production.  This is embedded in our sustainability model which recently won the award for Excellence in Sustainability at the 2007 Western Sydney Business Awards.”

All Yennora employees will be congratulated for their safety efforts with celebration workplace lunches and $50 vouchers.

Machine Operator and Fairfield resident George Wetton said: “Being aware of safety issues at work has made me a lot more aware of things at home. I find myself sub-consciously taking the same care and precautions around the house as I do at work, which is a good thing for my family.”

The key to achieving the record is the use of systematic safety programs, with all employees committed to conducting their work activities in a way that minimises risk, along with observing the behaviours of their colleagues and having the will and ability to stop, think, act and review.

The commitment to safety extends outside the gate.  Employees of Alcoa ARP Yennora recently participated in a child safety event at Yennora Public School where primary school student leaders from 12 local schools learnt how to Think Safe, Play Safe at school during the KIDS Foundation Safety Education and Leadership Field Day, an Alcoa Foundation initiative.
