Alcoa Anglesea’s Emergency Response Team and CFA members from Anglesea and Torquay worked together recently to conduct a breathing apparatus training exercise which involved a mock-rescue of people trapped in a tunnel and extinguishing a fire.

The training exercise was held in one of Alcoa Anglesea’s reclaim tunnels which provides good conditions for search and rescue members who need to wear appropriate breathing equipment. Alcoa Anglesea’s Emergency Response Team Coordinator Graham Nixon said the aim of the exercise was to carry out a search in the tunnel and rising conveyor and then rescue three people who were trapped while also extinguishing a fire. “The scenario was based on smoke billowing from the reclaim tunnel while three tradespersons were in that tunnel maintaining the conveyor,” Mr Nixon said. “The tunnel was filled with theatrical smoke and all lights were switched off to add to the realism of the exercise. The exercise was repeated several times to give all participants a chance to practice their skills.” Mr Nixon said Alcoa Anglesea’s Emergency Response Team had an established history of shared training exercises with the local emergency services that provided great learning opportunities for all organisations involved. “Late last year we hosted the Victorian Mines and Quarries Rescue Competition at the site with teams from all over the State attending for a two-day activity,” Mr Nixon said. “Our site offers a unique and safe training environment for emergency services teams with the infrastructure we have in the mine and the power station and the fact that it is all very contained. “Alcoa Anglesea’s Emergency Response Team also gets to work alongside these experienced local crews, not only learning from them, but getting to know them so we can work effectively together in the event of any incidents,” Mr Nixon said. He said feedback received from the 18 Anglesea and Torquay CFA members involved in the recent training exercise was very positive.
