Alcoa Point Henry employee Brian Maloney will cycle to Adelaide this Easter as part of a personal challenge which will also help raise money for not-for-profit organisation KIDS Foundation.

Brian, who has been a keen cyclist for 25 years, has set himself the personal challenge of cycling solo to Adelaide within a week to test his own fitness levels after years of cycling competitively and recreationally. As part of the personal challenge Brian will carry his own sleeping gear including a tent and sleeping bag over the 800km journey. The 45-year-old father of one said he planned to leave Geelong on Sunday April 8, with stop overs in Lismore, Hamilton, Penola, Kingston, Meningie and Strathalbyn, before reaching Adelaide about April 15. “I have been cycling for many years now and have participated in the Murray to Moyne, Around the Bay in a Day and the Geelong Corporate Triathlon all off which raise money for various worthwhile charities,” Brian said. “I cycle about 250-300kms each week around the Bellarine Peninsula and as far as Apollo Bay some weeks and I thought it was about time I set myself a personal challenge. “That’s when I decided to cycle to Adelaide within a week and I thought that while I was doing something for myself it was also a good opportunity to do something for others too. So I decided to raise money for the KIDS Foundation which is an organisation that delivers programs that prevent injuries among school children and recovery programs to those who have suffered serious injuries or burns. “I already had some association with the KIDS Foundation through my work at Alcoa because for every week Alcoa Point Henry achieves no recordable injuries $1500 is donated to the KIDS Foundation. And also having a young child at home myself has made me more aware of the importance of promoting safety not only in the workplace but also at home where children can suffer injuries.” Anyone wishing to sponsor Brian and donate money to the KIDS Foundation should call 0409 571 456.
