Alcoa tour for water-wise Yarloop students

Alcoa’s water conservation initiatives were the focus of Yarloop Primary School students when they toured the company’s Wagerup refinery on August 14.

Throughout the year Yarloop Primary School has been involved in becoming a Waterwise School: a program designed by the water corporation, aimed at educating students and communities about the need to protect and value water resources.

School coordinator of the Waterwise program, Lesley Lovell, said, “The community has a strong connection with Alcoa, and we thought it would be a great ‘real life’ experience to see first hand how Alcoa uses their water.”

“The students just loved the tour, they were fascinated with the ways that Alcoa recycled and reused their water in a variety of ways to produce alumina,” said teacher Kate Rogers.

“The school is aiming to reduce water waste by continually checking taps around the school grounds. The tour to Alcoa allowed the students to see how the prevention of water waste occurred on a larger scale.”
