Alcoa and Kids Foundation: improving health and safety

Employees of Alcoa Australia Rolled Products’ Yennora are taking on the SeeMore Challenge, a KIDS Foundation initiative aimed at improving health and fitness while raising funds for school safety programs.

Starting on 1 November Alcoa Yennora staff will buddy up to complete 226 kms of physical activity during the month—the equivalent distance to the Iron Man Challenge. For every kilometer completed participants will raise a minimum of $1. Alcoa ARP’s Yennora Location Manager John Costley was the first to register partnering with Environment Health & Safety Manager Mark Davies. Each will encourage the other to reach personal fitness goals and raise money to bring the KIDS Foundation Safety Club Programs to local schools. “Safety is an important core value of both the KIDS Foundation and Alcoa. We share a common goal to promote injury prevention, whether it’s here on site or in the general community, and Alcoa is proud to be involved in the SeeMore Challenge,” Mr Costley said. “It’s also a great way to get fit and I’m really pleased so many of our staff are getting into the spirit of the challenge. I’m sure we’ll easily cover the 226 kms just walking around the Yennora site!” Committed to safety Alcoa ARP Yennora recently achieved a significant milestone going 500 days without a Lost Work Day Injury. KIDS Foundation is a not for profit organisation that provides financial and emotional support to children who have been injured and require ongoing rehabilitation. It also conducts child safety education programs in the community. Already operating in other Alcoa Australia sites, the Alcoa-KIDS Foundation partnership received a prestigious 2006 Australian Prime Minister's Excellence in Community Business Partnership Award.
All participants of the SeeMore Challenge receive a training kit containing all sorts of goodies such as a pedometer, exercise accessories, Swisse Vitamins and a fitness and nutritional training guide. Alcoa’s Yennora Community Chest will fund registration fees. For further information contact: Josephine Parrett 02 9681 9554 or 0404 800 542
