Not just another ‘average’ day thanks to national Injury Free Day

On an average day in Australia, 5,000 kids are injured in serious accidents. To turn around this shocking statistic the KIDS Foundation, with support from the Alcoa Foundation, rolled out the first ever national Injury Free Day (IF Day) on 25 October.

The KIDS Foundation is dedicated to childhood injury prevention and injury recovery.  Its CEO, Susie O’Neill, said “Too many children are injured everyday from accidents including burns, falls and playground accidents.  We wanted to create a national day of awareness and action to turn the tide on these and other completely unacceptable injury averages.’”

Alcoa of Australia operations across Australia took part in IF Day activities to support KIDS Foundation’s efforts.

On Monday Alcoa of Australia Managing Director, Wayne Osborn, and his senior management team went back to primary school on October 23 to help children learn about safety. Mr Osborn and eight Alcoa managers worked with students at North Parmelia Primary School on a range of safety activities as part of a child safety partnership between the Alcoa Foundation and KIDS Foundation.

Mr Osborn said “Awareness about safety issues and risk management is as important for children as it is in our workplaces.  Both Alcoa and KIDS Foundation share a vision for zero-injuries.  The Alcoa Foundation supported KIDS Foundation School Safety Club program gives our kids a fun and effective way to learn about accident prevention.”

The Alcoa Foundation has supported KIDS Foundation and Safety Club schools around Australia to celebrate IF Day with a specially designed IF Day kit featuring a range of suggested safety activities.

At Alcoa sites across Australia employees ran safety awareness campaigns and employees took part in awareness and fund raising activities to promote IF Day and the work of KIDS Foundation.

Susie O’Neill said “Our partnership with Alcoa was recently honoured with a Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnerships Award for a multi-state partnership.”

“We are proud of the partnership and with Alcoa’s help we believe we can make a real difference to the safety of children across Australia.”
