Pinjarra to be the new centre for Alcoa global business services

Alcoa of Australia today announced it would be relocating key business support services to a custom built, state-of-the-art facility in Pinjarra.

Alcoa Managing Director Wayne Osborn said the move reflected the significant contribution Pinjarra and the Peel region already played in the global alumina industry and the industry’s future growth.

“This move will position Alcoa for further strong growth in Western Australia and reaffirm Alcoa’s commitment to WA, Pinjarra and the Peel region,” he said.

The new facility will have capacity for 100 employees from Alcoa’s procurement, operations management, finance and human resource services.

The Peel region already hosts the largest integrated alumina refining system in the world and the recently upgraded Pinjarra Alumina refinery is one of the most efficient alumina refineries in the world.

Mr Osborn said the Peel region was the driving force behind Australia’s aluminium industry and was a critical part of the global industry.

“It makes great business sense for us to locate our business support services close to the centre of our operations and thereby consolidate the region as a ‘centre of excellence’ for the alumina industry globally.”

Alcoa is the world’s largest alumina producer, producing over 8 million tonnes of alumina from the Peel and South West regions each year.  This represents almost half of Australia’s total alumina production, 13 per cent of total world demand and 8 per cent of WA’s total exports.

For every export dollar Alcoa earns, 80 cents stays in Australia.  Alcoa distributed over $A3.4 billion in Australia last year.

Alcoa’s investment in Australia has grown significantly, now totalling over $A12 billion.  The multi- million Pinjarra refinery upgrade and the proposed Wagerup refinery expansion will continue that trend and further consolidate the Peel as a global producer of alumina.
