Alcoa, GRVEC and GMC recognise Geelong’s Future Leaders of Industry

Alcoa Point Henry, in partnership with Geelong Regional Vocational Education Council and the Geelong Manufacturing Council, tonight (July 27) recognised some of Geelong’s future manufacturing stars when it launched a scholarship program aimed at attracting local students to the manufacturing industry.

Thirteen local secondary students were inducted into the Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry program which allows year 9 and 10 students to study various aspects of the manufacturing industry through a structured six-month program. Scholarship recipients also received $250 to be held in trust by the recipients’ schools for education purposes as part of the Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry program.

Stephanie Long, Josh McIntosh, Kate McCain, Aleksandar Vuska, Dylan McFarlane, Rhyce Murphy, Phillip King, Alana Mundy, Calum Fowler, Adrian Balog, Sean Gray, Victoria Baran and Alyce Delkovski were the first students to be inducted into the program.

Alcoa Point Henry Smelter Operations Manager Dr Jenny Purdie said the Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry program would provide students with an insight into how the industry operated while also helping to raise the profile of manufacturing in the Geelong region.

“The program has been designed to encourage young people to consider a career path in manufacturing and follow a study path which could lead to employment opportunities in the manufacturing industry in the future,” Dr Purdie said.

“Through the Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry scholarship scheme and the broader program Alcoa and six other local manufacturing industries are demonstrating its commitment to providing further education and training opportunities to local young people.

“By keeping young local people engaged in further education and training and helping them to develop skills attractive to employers we are building our community capacity and social capital.”

GD MFG Engineers Pty Ltd, Sava Engineering, AGB Group, Danum Engineering, Kempe Services and Brockman Engineering have also assisted with the Future Leaders of Industry program.
