Recycled message through art helps climate change

The giant aluminium installation at this year’s Sculpture by the Sea exhibition will be viewed by the WA public in many ways – some will see it as minimalist art, others as a clever use of recycled materials.

What many viewers may not see – at least not straight away - is that the crushed aluminium cans donated by Alcoa for ‘Urban America in Australia’ will ultimately be recycled again and are linked to finding solutions to global climate change.

Alcoa Managing Director Wayne Osborn said the work of American installation artist Tom Pershall was the perfect demonstration of how aluminium has a lifecycle beyond its original form.

“Aluminium has lifecycle benefits and is sustainable in nature.  As Principal sponsor of Sculpture by the Sea we are particularly excited to support the inclusion of a sculpture created from recycled aluminium,” he said.

“Through recycling and the use of aluminium in transport, Alcoa believes aluminium has an important role to play in the solution to global climate change, so it is encouraging to see the emergence of artists such as Pershall choosing to work with this sustainable metal.

“The process of transforming bauxite into raw aluminium, then into cans and now into this dramatic work of art is inspiring. Equally inspiring is seeing the community come together to appreciate art.

“Creative communities are strong communities and Alcoa’s partnership with Sculpture by the Sea helps provide a stage where creativity is stimulated.”

Pershall has over twenty years experience as an artist and was awarded the Sydney Water Environmental Sculpture Prize last year at the 2005 Sculpture by the Sea exhibition held on Bondi beach.

In addition to supporting the work of Tom Pershall, Alcoa has supplied aluminium to four of the other exhibiting artists. Alcoa is also supporting the Sculpture by the Sea education program, where children will learn about the sustainable nature of aluminium while creating their own mini masterpiece!

Sculpture by the Sea is an annual sculpture exhibition running from 9th – 19th March at Cottesloe Beach. This free exhibition will showcase some 50 sculptures by Western Australia's leading sculptors, alongside works by selected Australian and international artists.
