Celebrating International Women’s Day at Portland Aluminium

Portland Aluminium hosted Portland District Hospital CEO Marie Shea as guest speaker on Wednesday March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Ms Shea spoke to Portland Aluminium employees, contractors, union representatives and other invited guests about the rewards and challenges females face in public leadership roles.
Portland Aluminium operations manager John Osborne said International Women’s Day was a chance to recognise the contribution made by women in all facets of life.
“At Portland Aluminium diversity among our workforce is both valued and encouraged,” Mr Osborne said.
“We work in an inclusive environment that embraces change, new ideas, respect for the individual and equal opportunity to succeed.
“International Women’s Day offers an opportunity for all employees, both male and female, and the wider community to come together and celebrate diversity and the way it enriches not only our businesses but also the wider community,” he added
Other highlights of the day included an informal breakfast and a workshop with senior female students from local secondary schools and a panel of Portland Aluminium women working in diverse roles. Students had the opportunity to discuss a range of topics around females working in non-traditional roles, the juggle of work and family and women in the modern workforce.
Ms Shea said she was pleased to be able to join the celebrations for International Women’s Day.
“International Women’s Day is a day where we come together to celebrate women’s equality worldwide and highlight achievements made by women in our community,” she said.
The first International Women’s Day marches were held in Australia in 1931. Since then Australian women have participated in International Women’s Day activities each year.
