Access to Portland Aluminium’s Baxter House facility will be restricted due to continued vandalism, effective immediately.

The Thistle Road site which features native bushland, walking tracks, play equipment and barbecue facilities, and is part of the 500 hectares of heathland and wetland flora and fauna habitat, on-site nursery, working farm and material recycling facility known as Smelter in the Park has been damaged by vandals multiple times in recent months. Portland Police stepped up patrols in the area late last year; however the vandalism has continued to occur on a regular basis. Portland Aluminium Operations Manager John Osborne said there was be no other option than to restrict community access to Baxter House to ensure the safety of the public. “At Portland Aluminium health and safety is our number one priority. We value the safety of our employees and their families whether at work or in the community. Limiting the access to Baxter House was a last resort, especially when it is used by so many groups, families, schools, employees and individual members of the community, but we will not put anyone’s safety at riskâ€. Mr Osborne said. Portland Aluminium is a values based organisation and is committed to protecting the health and well being of individuals and the environment. Baxter House will remain open to the public Monday – Friday 8am to 4.30pm. The site will be locked in the evenings and at weekends. People wishing to use the facility after hours or on weekends are encouraged to contact Portland Aluminium’s Plant Protection Office on 5521 5400 to arrange access.
