Independent audit backs Alcoa response

An independent audit of spill incidents last year at Alcoa’s Kwinana alumina refinery has found that Alcoa’s response was “comprehensive and appropriate”.

The auditors have acknowledged that Alcoa moved swiftly to clean up affected areas, fully investigated all incidents and had implemented the appropriate corrective actions.

They also found there was no single cause. A range of factors contributed to the incidents including a major power failure, human error and equipment malfunction.

Kwinana refinery manager Simon Butterworth said the company’s comprehensive response ensured there was minimal environmental impact from any of the spills.

“No spill is acceptable to Alcoa or to the community and I apologise for these events,” he said. “I would also like to commend our employees on their response which ensured the minimal impact.”

The auditors acknowledged the considerable resources Alcoa has allocated to preventative and corrective measures.

In total, almost $14 million is being spent to upgrade equipment and containment in areas where the spills occurred. All of these projects were in train before the audit.

The independent review was commissioned by the Department of Environment after concerns raised by the Minister about the possibility of a systemic problem.

“Clearly, the auditors found there was no systemic problem,” Mr Butterworth said. “What they found was what we have always said - that a variety of factors were responsible.”

Mr Butterworth said Alcoa cooperated fully with the auditors, providing extensive information, full site access for inspections, and open access to employees and management for interviews.
