Pinjarra Residents Attend Refinery Efficiency Upgrade Open Day

Community members in the Pinjarra area attended an Open Day about the proposed Pinjarra Refinery Efficiency Upgrade.
The Open Day was held at Twigz Restaurant last Wednesday 22 October 2003 and was organised to give the local community a better understanding of the wide range of issues relating to the proposed $440 million project.
Alcoa representatives and Stakeholder Reference Group members attended the Open Day to talk about the proposed project and answer questions from the community about the Upgrade.
Information about the environmental, economic, social and other general aspects about the project were on display at the Open Day.
Local farmer and Stakeholder Reference Group (SRG) member, Glenys Fawcett, said that the Open Day provided an important opportunity for the public to become better informed about the Efficiency Upgrade.
The SRG, which consists of local community representatives, was created to represent the views of the local community during the proposed Efficiency Upgrade.
“The SRG has already received a number of important briefings on the proposed project covering significant environmental and social issues. The Open Day was very beneficial in the ongoing process of educating the wider public about these matters,” she said.
One of the representatives from the Pinjarra refinery who attended the Open Day was Gordon Baird, WA Environmental Team Leader.
“In particular, the Open Day gave local residents an opportunity to find out more information on the environmental issues relating to this proposed project.
“Many people, for example, do not realize the proposed Efficiency Upgrade will involve a major improvement of the emissions control systems at the Pinjarra refinery which will result in a reduction of some key refinery emissions even though production levels will increase.
