Minister for Family and Community Development Amanda Vanstone today officially launched a new research facility that will tackle community development issues in Australia.

The Alcoa Research Centre for Stronger Communities at Curtin University of Technology will make a practical contribution to the development of stronger communities at all levels of society.
Alcoa World Alumina Managing Director Wayne Osborn said the Centre was an important resource that would address the social issues Australia faced in the future. "Alcoa believes the Stronger Communities project is one of the most important new community-focused initiatives in Australia at the present time. It is certainly one of the most important new community partnership projects to be undertaken by our company," he said. “The Stronger Communities focus reflects Alcoa’s deep commitment to sustainability and sustainable communities. It supports Alcoa’s drive to build community capacity and to undertake partnerships which contribute to both our communities and the company.” At the launch, the appointment of Professor Daniela Stehlik as the Chair of Stronger Communities was announced. Professor Stehlik has a Doctor of Philosphy in Social Work & Social Administration from the University of Western Australia and an extensive body of work on community capacity building and resiliency.
Mr Osborn said he was particularly enthused and encouraged by the work that Professor Stehlik had done in the area of community resiliency and in particular, the role industry has as a corporate citizen in contributing to the strength of communities.
“Alcoa’s vision for the Alcoa Research Centre for Stronger Communities at Curtin is far reaching,” he said. “It will provide meaningful research and widely applicable, credible outcomes which will be of real benefit in deepening understanding of what builds successful communities and strengthens the fabric of those communities across the country.” The Alcoa Research Centre for Stronger Communities based within the Humanities Division at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. It will build on the extensive relationship that already exists between Alcoa and Curtin as well as providing both organisations with the opportunity to further their already strong commitment to community development.
