message from alan cransberg, managing director, alcoa of australia

Alcoa recently celebrated a milestone around something that benefits us all, everyday. 125 years ago, we discovered how to make aluminium. Thanks to the discovery of this process, we can now produce thousands of products that are safer, lighter, more fuel efficient and highly recyclable. Since this discovery, the aluminium story has been nothing short of remarkable - opening up entire markets and industries, from cookware to electrical conductors, to car frames, to space shuttles and iPods.

I’ve been speaking recently about how ‘megatrends’ are securing aluminium's place as a critical part of our future.  This constantly changing world we live in requires us to react and adapt quickly. And as our world prepares to deal with a rapidly growing population, ever-expanding cities and an unprecedented demand for energy - Alcoa is finding ways to meet today's challenges with innovative aluminium solutions.

It’s not just transport, construction and everyday items like cans where aluminium has an impact – this month our miracle metal has been showcased in the form of art at Sculpture by the Sea in Perth. This year 10 sculptures feature aluminium and as a major partner of the exhibition, we also supported three artists who chose to sculpt with our metal. My favourite element of this partnership though is the interaction of kids with art and artists (through the ‘Alcoa School Education Program’). We facilitate around 8000 school kids to take part in the program, including a whole bunch from around our operations in the South-West. I’m a big believer that experiences like this enrich young lives.  Click through the stories below to read more and check out the fantastic pictures from the beach.
