message from alan cransberg, managing director, alcoa of australia
Alcoa’s annual worldwide Month of Service is nearly here! Every October we celebrate volunteering and encourage our people to get out into the community and help make a difference in people’s lives. We have a bunch of people who volunteer all year round and I'm proud of those who take the time and effort to make a difference. The Month of Service activities give volunteering more focus and expose others to the opportunities to add value to the community. Last year in October, some 23,000 Alcoans around the world got involved, and this year I’m looking forward to seeing our people work with local RSLs and charities, promote breast cancer awareness, plant native trees to help restore coastlines, and support kids safety in schools (to name just a few activities!)
We are also surveying our stakeholders this month – internal and external. I’m always keen to better understand how others experience Alcoa – what are we doing well, what could we do better – importantly, what is the perception of us? Many of you may be participating in our online survey and these results help inform our community engagement and are very important to us, so thank you for your candid feedback. And our annual Global Voices survey is being completed by our own people, again, the results being critical to inform our engagement strategies.
Our global refining research and development team, the Technology Delivery Group, based here in Australia, had yet another award win this month - this time at the 2010 WA Engineering Excellence Awards. The team won the ‘Environment’ category for technology that’s reducing our carbon dioxide emissions and energy use. They are a pretty clever bunch! Read more.
Business meanwhile powers along and we’ll continue our debates around critical issues like domestic gas security in WA, and the new Government’s approach to tackling climate change. Interesting days.
