This month the global business of Alcoa announced its first quarter 2010 results, with a loss from continuing operations of $194 million. There is still plenty more work to be done, but the results are an improvement on Q4 2009 when we saw a loss from continuing operations of $266 million. Alcoa continued to produce strong results in cash sustainability this quarter and the company is on track to deliver our new increased 2010 annual cash sustainability goals. Read more.

A great achievement recently with Alcoa being named an Employer of Choice for Women for the 9th consecutive year. We are incredibly proud that 60% of our people having been with us for more than 10 years, indicating that strong flexibility and diversity policies do make good business sense when it comes to retention. You may be aware that we are currently negotiating new Enterprise Bargaining Agreements for our WA employees who are represented by the Australian Workers' Union. While these negotiations always take some time, I am confident of reaching an agreement that is fair to employees, by maintaining competitive salaries and working conditions, and to the business, by ensuring the company can remain competitive in a global market.
