Right now, keeping ahead of the global downturn is our focus. How do we run a sustainable business so we come out the other side of this stronger? This month Alcoa announced a series of decisive operational and financial actions to significantly improve the Company’s cost structure and liquidity. You may have read about this, and our strategies may be similar to some of yours. As we forge our way through this challenge - and other vital issues such as the development of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme - we are paying particular attention to our communities and trying to find ways to maintain support with far fewer dollars.

Our partnership with Sculpture by the Sea once again brought an amazing dimension to the Perth arts scene in March, right bang on the beach with all manner of sculpture (including some in aluminium). Behind the scenes, we enabled some 1400 kids from our communities and the Perth area to participate in sculpture workshops. I think it’s critical we engage with our youngest stakeholders, and this commitment is reflected also in our launch of ‘discover alcoa’ - an education and experiences program providing online resources and interactive curriculum activities for teachers and students across the country. It’s my hope that through ‘discover alcoa’ we’ll be building basic academic capability while opening young people’s minds to the resources industry, and the vital role aluminium plays in all our lives.
