message from alan cransberg, managing director, alcoa of australia
You may have heard that due to the economic climate, we have announced that work on the proposed expansion of the Wagerup Refinery in WA has been suspended until market conditions improve. While this decision was not taken lightly, it was necessary given the unprecedented challenges facing us, and all business in fact. We are committed to the expansion and when the time is right we will revisit the project. What the financial crisis has shown is the importance of running strong businesses. Alcoa in Australia is in excellent shape which puts us in a strong position for the future. There will always be challenges, and we see these as opportunities to strengthen and improve our business further.
I want to say a huge thank you to our 2000 plus employees who participated in the Alcoa Foundation’s Worldwide Month of Service in October. We had a 6% increase in employee participation from last year, and the response from our communities was fantastic. Read more about our employees’ volunteering efforts below.
