message from alan cransberg, managing director, alcoa of australia
October is always a busy and rewarding time at Alcoa - our employees Australia-wide join Alcoa’s Worldwide Month of Service to celebrate volunteering. Some 46,000 Alcoans in 36 countries are volunteering this month to make a difference in their local communities. I love our volunteering effort – it’s something that helps set us apart and helps define our values as a company.
Of course this happens against the background of global economic turmoil. Alcoa is responding to the upheaval by continuing to focus on our efficiencies and operational costs, reviewing capital expenditure, and engaging all of our people to continue to look for improvements in how we run the business. We know how to be competitive in a lower metal price environment and are assisted by the weakening Australian dollar. We respond readily to business challenges and we are a strong business with good people, prepared to weather this storm. This will require special efforts from us all, and we’ll keep you informed as we go.
