message from alan cransberg, managing director,
alcoa of australia

The first half of 2008 has seen several significant milestones for Alcoa, demonstrating our on-going commitment to the communities in which we operate.

Alcoa’s environmental management was recognised when we won, in partnership with Greening Australia, the United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Award for ‘best specific environmental initiative’ for our Moolapio land management program at our Point Henry Smelter in Geelong.  The award acknowledges action taken at a local level to address global environmental issues.  Click on the link below to read more.

We have also recently announced our multi-million dollar commitment to the Wagerup Sustainability Fund, which will be linked to production at our Wagerup Refinery, and could be up to $15 million over the next 20 years.  The Fund was an idea from community and was set up in 2004.  You can read more about our donation by reading on below.

The Premier of Western Australia, Alan Carpenter, officially opened our Peel Regional Office in early July.  The new office has brought 60 Alcoa jobs to the region and has helped boost the local economy.  In line with Alcoa’s global commitment to sustainability, our new office is best practice in energy efficiency and has been designed to achieve a 4-star Australian Building Greenhouse Rating.

This month has of course seen great movement in the emissions trading scheme (ETS) debate, with the release of Professor Garnaut's report, and Minister Wong's Green Paper. Like many of you, we are working through the detail and will make a public submission in due course. We continue to support an ETS that delivers reductions in greenhouse gas emissions without compromising the international competitiveness of Australia's alumina and aluminium industry. We believe in a sustainable solution, one that supports greenhouse solutions and Australian jobs.
