Social and Economic Opportunities to Sustain the Region around Wagerup Refinery
Alcoa has a long-standing relationship with our communities and we are proud of the community projects and partnerships we have developed.
Ongoing discussions have been held in the local community and with Harvey and Waroona Shires about some of the sustainability initiatives as a result of the Wagerup refinery expansion.
Sustainability Fund
These initiatives include funding for a 20-year Sustainability Fund to support local infrastructure and projects in the Harvey and Waroona shires that will facilitate sustainable development.
Alcoa has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the shires of Harvey and Waroona which will provide funding to help build stronger and self-sustaining communities in the local area.
The purpose of the arrangement is to deliver long term benefits and security to Alcoa’s neighbours within the local area. Alcoa has agreed to provide funding for rejuvenation initiatives in the Yarloop Township and to establish a sustainability fund.
Enterprise and Learning Centre
Alcoa has also committed to investing $3 million for an Enterprise and Learning Centre as part of the Wagerup Three expansion, which arose from needs identified during extensive research and consultation undertaken over the past few years. Alcoa is in the planning phase for the new Centre and will consult with the local community in the near future so that local people can provide further input into planning. We are hoping to secure Federal Government funding for the facility and discussions are now underway with government representatives.

Through these initiatives and our other community partnerships, Alcoa is using its presence in the region as a catalyst for generating long term sustainable development surrounding Wagerup.
