Careers in Trades
Tradespeople provide all the supporting services that keep the wheels of the mining industry turning.
Mechanical Fitter/Machinist Boilermaker/Welder Electrical Instrument Fitter Industrial Plant Mechanic Motor Mechanic
ELECTRICAL TRADESPEOPLE repair and maintain all electrical equipment and controls. They look after the communications systems and the computer control systems.
INDUSTRIAL PLANT MECHANICS work on heavy equipment and plant, while other MECHANICAL TRADESPEOPLE specialise in areas such as fluid power hydraulics, gas fitting, engines and fuel systems.
FITTERS are involved in the overhaul of refinery equipment and MACHINISTS manufacture items essential to the refinery’s operation.
Tradespeople can develop additional skills to broaden the type of work they are involved in.
On the Job Trained
At Alcoa, some jobs don’t require any previous mining qualifications or trade skills at all. These include jobs at the mine sites and at the refineries.
These positions are open to both men and women with a wide variety of life experiences behind them.
