Careers in Trades

Tradespeople provide the services that keep the wheels of our operations turning. Job roles include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Mechanical Fitters/ Machinists;
  • Boilermakers/ Welders;
  • Electrical Instrument Technicians;
  • Industrial Plant Mechanics; and
  • Motor Mechanics.
     
Electrical Tradespeople repair and maintain all electrical equipment and controls on site.  They look after the communications systems and the computer control systems.
 
Industrial Plant Mechanics work on heavy equipment, while Mechanical Tradespeople specialise in areas such as fluid power hydraulics, gas fittings, engines and fuel systems.
 
Fitters are involved in the overhaul of refinery equipment and Machinists manufacture items essential to the sites’ operation.
 
Once in the job, Tradespeople can develop additional skills over time to broaden their role.
 
On the Job Trained
At Alcoa, some jobs don’t require any previous qualifications or a trade qualification. These include jobs at mines, refineries and smelters, such as:
 
  • Refinery Operators;
  • Trades Assistants;
  • Exploration Drillers;
  • Mine Workers;
  • Nursery Assistants;
  • Farmhands; and
  • Stores Officers.
