Recognition of environmental excellence and sustainability performance

Alcoa’s commitment to environmental management and sustainability has received international and national recognition:

Alcoa was the first mining company in the world to be recognised by the United Nations Environmental Program by inclusion in its Global 500 Roll of Honour for its mine rehabilitation in Western Australia.

We have also received 5 Golden Gecko awards – recognised as one of WA’s most prestigious environmental awards.

In 2008, Alcoa was invited to author a series of papers for a special edition of the Restoration Ecology Journal focusing on our acclaimed environmental research and management of our mining operations. This stems from our rehabilitation work winning the Society of Ecological Restoration International  ‘Model Project Award’ in 2003.

In 2007, Alcoa was recognised as ‘Best In Class’ in its approach to climate change disclosure by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a coalition of more than 315 global investors with more than $41 trillion in assets. The CDP report is a survey of the responses of ‘Financial Times 500’ corporations on climate change.

Through the Carbon Disclosure Project Alcoa was also included in the ‘Climate Disclosure Leadership Index’, a prestigious honour roll for global corporations addressing the challenges of climate change.
In 2008 Alcoa was ranked 4th in CNBC European Business's list of low-carbon climate pioneers. Maintaining its inclusion from the list’s inaugural year in 2007.

CNBC explained Alcoa’s top 5 ranking: “Alcoa is working hard to combat climate change. A founding member of the US Climate Action Partnership, the company has a 2020 Strategic Framework for Sustainability in place, which includes specific emissions targets, and has also committed to cutting all its major emissions over the next decade by as much as 60% for sulphur dioxide, 30% for NOX, 50% for VOC and 80% for mercury. In Australia, Alcoa is partnering with other companies to sequester carbon dioxide in bauxite.”

In 2008 Alcoa was once again selected as one of the top 10 leading multinational companies in the Covalence Ethical Ranking – a barometer of how companies are perceived in the ethics field. Alcoa ranked first in the mining/metals sector and has been in the top 10 among all companies since the independent ranking began in 2005.

Also in 2008, Alcoa was named as one of the most sustainable corporations in the world in the fourth annual Global 100 ranking of the top role models in sustainable business practices, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Alcoa has been on the list every year since the ranking was started in 2005.

Alcoa was named number 1 in the metals category of Fortune 500s World’s Most Admired Companies – this is up from its number 4 place in 2008.
