Environmental excellence
Our Western Australian Mining group achieved 99 per cent species richness for its 2006 rehabilitation. In 2007 the mining group won the Western Australian State Government’s prestigious Golden Gecko award for the decommissioning of the Jarrahdale mine. We have now won five Golden Gecko awards in the 16 year history of the awards. The mining group received our second certificate of acceptance for 380 ha of rehabilitation at Jarrahdale. This returns the ongoing management responsibility for this land to the Department of Environment and conservation and brings the total area handed back to government to 1355 ha. The revision of the completion criteria for rehabilitated areas that started in 2003 was finalised in March 2007. Completion criteria are standards agreed with government and other stakeholders that indicate when our rehabilitation can be handed back to the government. Alcoa is required to review the completion criteria every five years. The McCoy facility at the Huntly bauxite mine won the Department of Water and Water Corporation Water Recycling (Commercial Project) Award and was a finalist for the Water Conservation and Efficiency Award. These awards recognise Alcoa’s contribution to the improved use of WA’s valuable water sources. Our unique Carbon Capture project which mixes waste CO2 with bauxite residue, providing a carbon sink for large amounts of this major greenhouse gas, was recognized with the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ) Clean Air Achievement WA Award in 2007.
