Conservation
Alcoa has an ongoing interest and involvement with Peregrine Falcons in Victoria, with both the Anglesea and Point Henry sites working alongside the Victorian Peregrine Project (VPP) to assist with research and conservation of the species.
This work is part of the environmental management efforts underway at each Alcoa site to reduce our environmental footprint and promote conservation.
The latest development in our work with VPP has resulted in the endangered Peregrine Falcon becoming the newest addition to the world of reality podcasting, with Alcoa’s Anglesea Power Station broadcasting its resident Falcon nest over the World Wide Web.
The Peregrine Falcons made their home at the power station in 2003, and following an unsuccessful breeding season, the Anglesea environment team built them a custom home on the site’s water tower – the tall structure closely mimicking the birds’ preferred natural nesting environment and providing a more tranquil setting in which to raise a family.
Since then, seven fledglings have been born and raised in the bright pink nest, which today is home to Sheila, Maverick and family. The latest fledglings Dash and Concorde have just set off to explore the coastal haven of the Anglesea heath.
Thanks to a recently installed webcam on the water tower, now ornithologists and reality TV lovers from all over the world tune in via the Alcoa website to witness the day to day adventures of this amazing endangered species.
We hope the webcam will raise the profile of these spectacular birds and ultimately help the conservation of Peregrine Falcons in Australia.
