Sharing the benefits of success
As one of Australia’s leading exporters and employers, Alcoa makes a significant contribution to the communities in which we operate and the Australian way of life.
We share our success with shareholders, employees, customers and communities through jobs, business opportunities, taxes, dividends and partnerships.
In 2008 export sales were over $4 billion which amounts to almost three per cent of Australia’s goods exports or two per cent of Australia’s total exports, with 80 per cent of our total revenue staying in Australia through wages, local purchasing, taxes, capital investment and dividends to Australian shareholders.
This amounted to over $3.5 billion reinvested in the Australian economy.
Our strong financial performance stems from our highest ever annual production of alumina at 8.83 million tonnes. Aluminium production was also up and is our strongest performance at 548,950 tonnes.
Alcoa produces almost 50 per cent of Australia’s alumina and 30 per cent of Australia’s aluminium. Our alumina production in Western Australia accounts for 11 per cent of total world demand.
During what can only be described as a tremulous year in global markets, our performance was steady with revenue up on 2007 at $4.62 billion, while profits were lower at $976 million. The lower figures for 2008 reflect the weakening market and aluminium price.
In 2008 Alcoa was awarded the Western Australian Department of Industry and Resources’ Minerals and Energy Export Award.
The award recognises an organisation for outstanding export achievement in the production or primary processing of extractive and value-added minerals or energy products.
Alcoa of Australia is an unlisted public company and our two shareholders, Alcoa Inc. and Alumina Limited, were paid fully franked dividends of $890 million in 2008. These financial results are only applicable to Alcoa of Australia and do not include Alcoa Australia Rolled Products.
The continued economic success of our business in 2008 and our focus for 2009 underpins our commitment to health and safety and environmental excellence.
