Working in the resources industry
Mining. Australia’s Biggest Industry From the Stone Age to the Information Age, our world has been shaped by minerals and mining. As the world’s demand for minerals grows, the mining industry gets bigger and better, offering exciting, secure careers. Mining needs top quality people, and it pays good money to get them. The industry is well known for good pay and good conditions. Mining is an enormously varied industry that includes exploration, processing, transportation, marketing, and research. There are employment opportunities for men and women from all walks of life, with widely different skills. Minerals are found all over the planet, in some of the most interesting and exotic locations, so the skills you learn here can be your passport to a job anywhere in the world. There’s no rush. You don’t need to choose your career right now. It’s taken millions of years to create our mineral reserves, so you can spend a few more years studying to polish up your skills. Then you’ll be ready to stake a claim in Australia’s richly rewarding minerals industry. Mining makes money and creates jobs. In Australia mining is a multi-billion dollar business, providing jobs for thousands of people, and prosperity for our entire country. For example, Alcoa – the world’s largest alumina producer – contributes over $3.5 million to Australia’s balance of payments every day of the year. This means Australia’s economy gains over one thousand million dollars a year form Alcoa’s exports. Alcoa employs almost 5300 Australians, including 3900 in Western Australia. Additionally, it has been calculated that about four people are employed indirectly, as a result of bauxite – alumina operations, for each person directly employed. The extent of Australia’s mineral deposits means that the mining industry will continue making money and creating jobs for generations to come. Using the best environmental management systems in the world, mineral development is taking place side-by-side with many other land uses, including farming, tourism, and forestry. ALCOA is one of Australia’s biggest businesses. Alcoa began producing alumina in WA in 1963, mining bauxite at Jarrahdale and refining alumina at Kwinana. Since then the Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries have been built, creating a total production capacity of more than six million tonnes of alumina a year. Alcoa World Alumina Australia is part of Alcoa Inc, which operates at 215 locations in 31 countries. This global company is a fully integrated aluminium producer, with operations in all segments of the industry – from bauxite mining and alumina refining, through to smelting, fabricating and recycling. People are the key to Alcoa’s success. With more than 5,000 employees around Australia, a major investment in time, money and effort is made to ensure our people are treated with dignity and respect. The aim is to make sure they get job satisfaction, as well as income. The company even has a special Work and Family Policy which recognises every employee as a “whole person” with a life outside their job. Whatever your strengths, you can be sure at Alcoa there is room for you to develop them further, and make a genuine contribution to our dedicated and professional team.
