The Pinjarra alumina refinery was commissioned in 1972 then expanded to five units by 1976. The integral powerhouse consists of medium pressure boilers and back pressure turbines to provide the refinery's process heating and power requirements. The first of two combined cycle gas turbine units were constructed in 2004 by Alinta. This very efficient power generation configuration provides approximately 50% of Pinjarra's low pressure steam requirements. Alinta sells power to the regional grid.
