Employee Case Studies

Liz McLay
HR Services Representative
HR Helpdesk

Alcoa is one of the biggest employers of HR practitioners in regional WA, following the opening of the Peel Regional Office in 2008.

Liz McLay is part of Alcoa’s national HR Helpdesk team and says it’s a privilege to be part of such a well developed Human Resources Department.

“I work with some of the most experienced HR professionals in the industry, at Alcoa’s Peel Regional Office, which is very rewarding,” Liz explained.

Liz says the best thing about being based in Peel is that she doesn’t have to worry about Perth’s peak hour traffic and there are no delays in getting to and from work which gives her more personal time.

Alcoa believes it’s vital that essential support services, like HR, are located close to its operations rather than being in Perth.

“Employees from the Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries can now stop into the Peel Regional Office on their way home to pick up any urgent papers which we have prepared that same day,” Liz said.

The Peel Regional Office has been designed to promote teamwork and increased interaction between employees which often results in brainstorming as well as the sharing of ideas, leading to improved results.

“The layout of the office has created a friendlier atmosphere. The break-out areas allow us to meet a wider range of Alcoa employees and the open-plan layout has made it easier to greet people in the mornings.

“The office layout has also made us feel more like a part of the larger HR team. It’s much easier to gain access to our various support levels to help us solve HR Helpdesk queries,” Liz said.

Brenda Dickson
HR Services Representative

“I have less travel time to and from work, I’m closer to my family in case I’m needed urgently and I’m comfortable in the environment I know.”

Mandurah resident Brenda Dickson was more than pleased when told her role would be relocated from Alcoa’s head office at Booragoon to the new Peel Regional Office in Pinjarra.

But it is not only our employees who are reaping the benefits of being based in Peel, our business is benefiting also.

“Already, I have had managers preferring to drop-by and pick up documents rather than wait for the internal mail. I think I’m going to get to know more personnel now that I’m based closer to the sites,” she said.

“My work also benefits from having the departments I work closely with on hand.”

“I like the atmosphere in the new office because I feel like a member of a larger team.   I love the new and fresh surroundings and I’ve even got a bigger work space than previously.”
