Alcoa in Australia

Sculpture by the Sea

At Alcoa, we believe creativity is vital to building stronger, more vibrant communities.  With this belief Alcoa became the principal partner in Sculpture by the Sea.

Sculpture by the Sea is an annual sculpture exhibition that brings world-class creativity to the most public of spaces – the beach.  The exhibition runs for two weeks in March at Cottesloe Beach and two weeks in November at Bondi Beach.

Alcoa is also keen to profile the characteristics of aluminium, challenge the potential of its applications and continue to bridge the gap between industry and the arts.  So in addition to giving funding support to the event, Alcoa’s sponsorship also takes the form of supplying aluminium to those artists who choose to work with it.

Alcoa also proudly supports the Sculpture by the Sea education program.  This program sees more than 600 children from schools throughout the metro and near by rural communities enjoy workshops where they will meet the artists; learn about their sculptures and how they are created. This program is a great way to introduce young people to art.

This partnership allows Alcoa to not only support creativity in our community, but also showcase the versatility of aluminium.

Recycling as Art

In the 2006 exhibition the Alcoa Foundation provided support to artist Tommy Pershall to bring his art work “Urban America in Australia”, to Cottesloe. The work comprises of 46 bales of crushed aluminium cans.

Sims Metal generously loaned 26 tonnes of aluminium as crushed cans and each one of these cans comes from aluminium made by Alcoa in Australia.  What a fantastic way to remind us all that aluminium is endlessly recyclable.

After the exhibition the bales of cans will be taken back to the Sims Metals depot to continue their journey through the recycle process and to be reused in other aluminium products.

Recycling saves ninety five per cent of the energy it takes to make new metal. Alcoa and Aluminium are part of the solution to global climate change.
