Alcoa in Australia

Swan Alcoa Landcare Program

The Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP) provides funds for community groups or local government working with community groups involved in on-ground revegetation and rehabilitation projects within the Swan region in Western Australia.

The Program, which was established in 1998, has funded over 600 projects worth more than $3.2 million across the Perth metropolitan area.

That’s equated to hundreds of community groups and thousands of volunteers who are directly responsible for over 1 million plants planted, 300 kilometres of fencing installed and 200 hectares of weed removed since the Program’s inception.

Alcoa has played a vital role in providing more than $2 million since 1998 and has committed a further $750,000 providing the community with a secure source of funding until 2009.

The Swan Catchment Council manages the Program with support from staff at Alcoa and the Swan River Trust.

The range of activities made possible by SALP funding include: the creation of living streams from urban drains, fencing the Ellen Brook, weed control in bushland and revegetating saline land in Wooroloo.

Funding is available for a wide range of activities within the Swan region in Western Australia that address the following regional priorities:

  • retention, restoration and management of bushland, coastal, wetland and riverine vegetation.
  • protection and enhancement of the quality of surface water (streams, rivers, wetlands) and groundwater.

Supported projects range in size, and planning and technical advice is available.

Community involvement has played a key role in developing the SALP funding process. Community assessment panels decide which projects will be supported by SALP. Community-based decision making helps to ensure that projects meet local environmental priorities.

All projects involve partnerships between community groups and their local government, other local sponsors and State Government agencies. In-kind support and additional funding from project partners substantially increases the total value of SALP.
