Millenium Kids

Alcoa has been the Millennium Kids foundation partner since 1996. Millennium Kids, is a non-profit, non-political youth environmental organisation - run by kids, for kids aged 10-25 years.

Millennium Kids began in 1996 after a small group of Western Australian students were selected to attend the first United Nations ‘Leave It To Us’ Environmental Conference for Children in the UK.  On their return from the conference, the young people were disappointed with the level of youth involvement and decided to set the wheels in motion for developing their own youth environmental conference and, subsequently, their own youth-based environmental organisation.

Millennium Kids provided Alcoa with the opportunity to encourage young people to be environmental leaders by being active, aware of their environment, empower them to take action and help them solve environmental issues.

Since 1996, with Alcoa’s support, Millennium Kids has grown from a group of four children to become a network of 64 schools with 2500 students working on Millennium Kids projects throughout Western Australia.  Millennium Kids has also been able to train and mentor young people to start their own Millennium Kids chapters in Canada, South Africa and Indonesia.

The Millennium Kids agenda is directed by its Youth Board, comprised of fifteen members aged between 10 and 25 years, and is supported by the United Nations Environment Program Agenda 21, Chapter 25 Declaration which states ‘national governments should pay more attention to the opinions and concerns of children regarding the environment’ and how it should be managed for future generations.

Millennium Kids have developed many programs that answer the concerns of children and youth about the environment, and have developed partnerships with all levels of government, corporate and community sectors.

In 2004, Alcoa in Australia received an Alcoa EHS Achievement Award for its work with Millennium Kids.
