KIDS Foundation
K.I.D.S. (Kids in Dangerous Situations) Foundation was established in 1993 to develop and maintain injury prevention and injury recovery programs. As K.I.D.S. and Alcoa both hold safety as a core value, a partnership between the Alcoa Foundation and K.I.D.S Foundation was forged in 2005, with the key goal of educating children about risk management and safe behaviours. Alcoa has one of the lowest lost workday injury rates in Australia and its performance is better than the mining, construction, agriculture, forestry and fishing, and even retail trade industries. This partnership is an ideal platform through which Alcoa can share its safety expertise to benefit the broader community. Alcoa Foundation supports the ‘K.I.D.S Safety Club’ school safety program which aims to reduce the number of preventable injuries to children.
A series of ‘Alcoa Field Days’ are held regionally in Victoria, WA and NSW where Alcoa employees actively engage with school children in an educational, informative and activity-based day focused on safety. In Victoria, the program has expanded to include:
- ‘Seemores Challenge’, which involves employees fundraising for K.I.D.S Foundation by participating in an Ironman Challenge;
- A retiree support program (ROKS), where Alcoa retirees are engaged with K.I.D.S; and
- The Workers of Kids program (WOKS), a leadership and development program including a fundraising and a fitness challenge for Alcoa employees.
In addition Alcoa’s Victorian sites have instigated a Safety for KIDS program where the operations donate $1,500 to K.I.D.S Foundation for each work week they work injury free. On October 25 2006 Alcoa Foundation supported K.I.D.S Foundation in launching the inaugural national Injury Free Day in Australia. Injury Free Day aims to create national awareness of the KIDS Foundation vision with funds raised through the day used to increase awareness of the impact of childhood injuries and support rehabilitation centres and education programs. In 2006 the Alcoa K.I.D.S Foundation partnership was recognised with a Prime Minister’s Award for Community Business Partnerships, taking out the Multi-State Partnership category in Victoria. The partnership’s positive outcomes for the community include improved community safety, behaviour change in schools, improved recovery and support for the injured, stronger community leaders, and less social isolation for children in rehabilitation. What began as a small sponsorship has flourished into a real and committed partnership with a strong and growing supporter base, extended capacity of partners and a shared vision with genuine community outcomes.
Not just another ‘average’ day thanks to national Injury Free Day
