Alcoa in Australia

Frogwatch
Frogs are a natural indicator of the health of our environment. Over the years native frog populations in Western Australia have been slowly declining as urban development has changed the natural environment.

Alcoa Frog Watch was founded in 1995 to support conservation, information and education on frogs in Western Australia. The program, a joint initiative of Alcoa and the Western Australian Museum, is playing an important role in preserving frog populations and educating future generations about our environment and frogs.

The program achieves this through:

  • Education – Learning about frogs through the web site, live frog displays at the Museum’s Discovery Centre, talks by Alcoa Frog Watch staff, local night walks, a CD of southwest frog calls, posters and books.
  • Building frog-friendly gardens – Interactive workshops, demonstrations and a booklet providing the homeowner with the skills to turn their own backyard in to a haven for frogs.
  • Research – Alcoa of Australia supports a major research project in the Kimberley region of WA to document the amazing frogs of this remote tropical area.

Building frog-friendly gardens

This program is designed to teach the homeowner all they need to know to build their own frog-friendly garden.

The workshops and booklet cover everything from basic frog biology, plant selection and the art of “frogscaping” to encourage frogs to take up residence in the garden.

Workshops are scheduled with demonstration gardens to give people a hands-on experience at frog friendly gardening and pond installation to transform their own backyard.

Additionally, night walk sessions enable people to see and hear their local frogs.

Frogs of the Kimberly research project

Frogs of Kimberley is an exciting research project focussed on native frogs in Western Australia’s northern Kimberley region. The project aims to document the true diversity
of frogs in this rugged tropical region before the introduced cane toad invades the area.

Community monitoring and expeditions to search for new species of frogs will be conducted during the wet season. New discoveries can be seen and heard on the web site.
