Conservation & Environment
Alcoa is an active supporter of conservation and sustainability programs, working alongside partners that range from local catchment management groups to Australia’s peak environmental organisations.
In a global conservation and sustainability initiative, Alcoa and the Alcoa Foundation have launched a Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship program to support research on conservation and sustainability issues. As part of this program, Alcoa is providing $1.5 million to support research by Curtin University of Technology to explore sustainability issues and initiatives in Western Australia’s south coast region.
Alcoa has worked with Greening Australia for over 24 years and together we have launched the River Recovery program to restore, protect and manage Australia’s river systems. Through our partnership with Greening Australia, we have also developed the Make an Impact program which is engaging Alcoa employees in understanding and reducing their personal greenhouse footprint.
Other conservation and sustainability partnerships include:
- The Swan Alcoa Landcare Program which has assisted community-based groups on more than 500 conservation and landcare projects in Perth’s Swan River catchment since 1998.
- Alcoa Frogwatch, a partnership with the WA Museum, which supports conservation, information and education on frogs in Western Australia.
- The Woady-Yaloak Catchment group and the Corangamite and Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authorities in Victoria
- The Portland Sustainability in Schools Network in Victoria which is helping schools integrate sustainability into their curriculum and their day-to-day operations.
