30 green years and going strong

Back in 1982 few would have imagined a corporate/non-profit environmental partnership lasting 30 years, however on 5 June 2012, World Environment Day, Greening Australia and Alcoa celebrated this amazing milestone.

The 30 year partnership is one of the longest and most successful environmental partnerships in Australia and it touches every community where Alcoa operates, from Pinjarra to Portland, Wagerup to Geelong and beyond.

Alcoa of Australia and the Alcoa Foundation have invested millions of dollars into the partnership with major accomplishments including:
  • Millions of trees given to farmers to transform landscapes
  • Millions of seeds collected and seedlings planted by community members, Greening Australia volunteers and Alcoa employees
  • Hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours donated by community members and Alcoa and Greening Australia employees
  • Tens of thousands of school children and 500+ teachers have participated in education initiatives including the successful Grow Us A Home habitat revegetation program
  • Pioneered direct seeding technology and native seed banking both of which are still used today
  • Launched Breathe Easy, the first accredited carbon offset program for the general public
  • Created Make an Impact, an environmental carbon reduction program for Alcoa employees, Australian schools and community groups; this cutting-edge program has now been adopted by Alcoa globally
  • Fundamentally shaped Natural Resource Management (NRM) groups’ policy and practices across Australia
  • Created education tools and specialist programs for farmers and NRM groups
  • Advancing biofuel research through the Victorian Biochar and Energy From Trees Research Program.

The partnership’s success has been honoured on many occasions. Recently it was announced as a finalist in the 2012 United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards for environmental best practice. Other major awards garnered include the prestigious 2003 Prime Minister’s Award for Community Business Partnership, the 2008 United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Award for the Moolapio project, and the 2009 Western Australian Environment Award for the Nell’s Block project in Yarloop.

Alcoa employees and National Partnerships Manager Sarah Fordham are extremely proud of what has been achieved over 30 years.

“This partnership, and our accomplishments along the way, represent a huge achievement and I congratulate every person that’s been involved. The outcomes are worthy of celebrating,” she said.

World Environment Day also marked Greening Australia’s inception 30 years ago. Reaching such a milestone is a testament to the vision, passion and dedication of past and present employees.
