consumer electronics: aluminium is number one
Aluminium is not just infinitely recyclable and better at dissipating heat than plastic. Our metal plays an integral role in the future of sustainable design in consumer electronics.

When it comes to consumer electronics, aluminium is preferred: 92% of consumers prefer aluminium for their smartphones; 84% for their laptops.

Alcoa’s Director of Consumer Electronics Market Development, Randall Scheps, said: “Alcoa recognises that rapid growth in the consumer electronics market creates sustainability challenges, and aluminium is part of the solution.”

“Not only can aluminium be recycled infinitely without the need for downcycling, the metal’s light weight, durability, heat conductivity and limitless surface finishes make it the preferred choice over plastic by designers, manufacturers and consumers."

Consumer electronics represents a fast-growing market for aluminium, with the aluminium content in LCD TV’s and laptops alone expected to increase by 465% and 30% respectively by 2013, from a 2010 baseline.

To further close the sustainability loop, Alcoa recently took a 10% stake in Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the largest electronic waste recycler in North America. Through this partnership, Alcoa brings recycling expertise to the growing challenge of e-waste, enhancing the role aluminium plays in making electronics more sustainable.
