green mill treatment system becomes fully operational
The construction of Portland Aluminium’s new $14 million Green Mill Fume Collection and Treatment System is complete, becoming fully operational this month.

The System collects all the emissions from the Green Mill process (principally from coal tar pitch fumes) and filters them out using coke fines before sending the material back into the process.  The system will continue to improve our environmental performance and ensure Portland Aluminium remains an environmental benchmark for smelters around the world.

The System was one of very few key capital works projects Alcoa in Australia has constructed during the past 18 months, due to the economic downturn, and it will play an important role in continuing to reduce emissions and help ensure Portland Aluminium stays globally competitive.

Portland Aluminium Operations Manager, John Osborne, said the project, which commenced in November 2008, was a success in terms of meeting key milestones along the way and coming in on budget.

“The project team involved in the planning and construction of the System worked extremely hard to ensure construction remained on track, after confronting difficult winter and spring weather conditions,” Mr Osborne said.

“Local contractors, Keppel Prince and Days Electrical, along with Project Manager Worley Parsons worked collaboratively and safely to complete the project.”
