Month of Service is a time when we encourage employee volunteerism and celebrate our volunteering heroes.

A group of Alcoa volunteers from our Point Henry smelter lent a hand last month to help orphaned and injured wildlife alongside  the Leopold Wildlife Shelter & Wildlife Rescue (LWS).

The LWS’s goal is to rescue, raise, rehabilitate and release orphaned and injured animals back to their natural environment - the wild. The organisation travels from Warrnambool to Werribee in Victoria, and everywhere in-between, although most of their rescue work is carried out in and around Geelong and surrounding districts including Anglesea. This mean their rescue vehicle is on the road a lot and the help of volunteers is welcome.

A group of our people joined shelter owner Helen Burrell and shelter volunteers for a ‘backyard blitz’ at the organisation’s headquarters.

Under the watchful eyes of a few feathered and furry residents, our volunteers laid shock-absorbing rubber in and around the animal hospital and also installed synthetic grass in several enclosures.

Until our help, the Shelter’s team had resorted to laying thick doonas and blankets on the concrete to stop the kangaroos from seriously injuring their feet.

Owner Helen Burrell said: “Alcoa’s ACTION* grant and the work of its volunteers have enabled us to upgrade our facilities to a very high standard.

“Thanks to Alcoa’s generosity, Leopold Wildlife Shelter & Wildlife Rescue now has the latest in low impact flooring which means that all of the Macropods that come into our care will leave with perfectly healthy feet - giving them the best chance of survival in the wild where they belong.”

* ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighbourhoods) recognises the team efforts of at least five Alcoa employees who spend a minimum of four hours on a community service project for a local not-for-profit, community or non-governmental organisation. In recognition of the team's effort, the Alcoa Foundation makes a contribution to the organisation; grants are up to $US3,000.
