Aluminium is a key element in Jaguar’s new flagship XJ, which was unveiled in London recently.

Like the previous XJ, the new car is built from aluminium due to our metal’s light weight properties. According to Jaguar, its new car has a 150kg advantage over some of its luxury car rivals, while half the aluminium used in the new model is recycled.

The use of aluminium in transport provides lifecycle benefits from improved performance, fuel efficiency and lower greenhouse emissions.  Every kilogram of aluminium used in a car potentially saves a net 20 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions over the car’s life.  For other vehicles, such as trains, ferries and aircraft, the potential savings are even greater.

An aluminium component is 40 – 50% lighter than an equivalent steel component.   And every 10% reduction in weight produces 6 – 8% in fuel savings, with a consequent reduction in vehicle greenhouse emissions.

Aluminium is part of the solution to climate change - Alcoa researchers have forecasted that with global projections for the use of aluminium in cars and trucks and the numbers of vehicles in use, the aluminium industry has the potential to reach a climate neutral state by 2025.

This means the global warming impacts of aluminium production will be fully offset by the amount of carbon dioxide emissions saved by the use of aluminium in the transportation industry.

Jaguar Managing Director, Mike O’Driscoll, told the Australian newspaper: “The all-new XJ re-imagines the ultimate sporting luxury car. It’s beautiful, exhilarating to drive and, with a bold, enlightened approach to design, meets the challenges of our fast changing world.”

The new XJ is expected to hit Australian showrooms in 2010.

“Higher recycling rates deliver the endlessly recyclable benefits for cans, reducing carbon emissions, virgin material use and energy expenditure,” said Robert Budway, President of the Can Manufacturers Institute.

Some other fun facts about cans:

  • With used aluminium cans recycled and returned to a store shelf as a new can in as few as 60 days - consumers could purchase basically the same recycled aluminium can from a retailer's shelf nearly every 9 weeks or 6 times a year.
  • Using recycled aluminium beverage cans to produce new cans allows the aluminium can industry to make up to 20 times more cans for the same amount of energy.
  • It's estimated that since 1972 some 18.7 million tonnes of aluminium have been recycled. These 1,099 billion aluminium cans placed end-to-end could stretch to the moon and back some 174 times.
  • Aluminium never wears out, it can be recycled forever.
  • The energy saved each year through recycled cans could light the US city of Washington DC for 3.7 years.
  • 10,433 empty aluminium beverage cans weigh as much as US basketball star Shaq O'Neal.
  • Every 3 seconds a baby is born. In that time, 140 cans are born.
  • Recycling one aluminium can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours.
  • Aluminium cans have amazing strength. Four six-packs (24 cans) can hold a 4,000-pound aluminium-bodied sedan.
