our people

alcoa and employee engagement
At Alcoa, we feel confident that what we’re doing in relation to people management is working, because 60 per cent of our employees have worked for us for more than 10 years.

Employee retention is a major issue for Australian businesses and Alcoa is leading the way in employee engagement.  One example of this is through our Employee Suggestion Scheme

Our Employee Suggestion Scheme offers employees cash incentives if they come up with ideas which lead to cost savings to the business.   We don’t just receive ideas which result in financial savings though.  Over the years we have had a large number of suggestions which have resulted in safety, environmental and energy improvements - which are of course even more important to Alcoa than cost savings.

Alcoa’s philosophy is that we have a more productive and engaged workforce if our employees are encouraged to make suggestions for improvement and are listened to by management and the company.  Through the Employee Suggestion Scheme we’ve seen that employees appreciate participating in the growth of the business.  Last year, we received 10,843 suggestions across Australia and 6071 were accepted by Alcoa.

Our Make an Impact program is seeing employees taking real steps to be part of the solution to climate change. In partnership with Greening Australia, Alcoa devised a greenhouse footprint reduction kit for Alcoa employees and their families, known as Make An Impact.  The kit features an online greenhouse calculator which offers energy and water saving ideas to employees.  We encourage our employees to make an impact at work and home through simple practical changes which can make a big difference.  Over 800 Alcoa employees have signed up for Make an Impact, with numbers growing daily.

Alcoa lives by its core value to partner stronger communities.  We encourage our employees to get involved in the communities where they live and work and we have active volunteering initiatives to ensure this.  Last year, hours donated through employee volunteering were equivalent to a total of 8 years.  Through the Alcoa Foundation, we match employee time with financial contributions to not-for-profit organisations.  The Alcoa Foundation is a global resource which actively invests in improving the quality of life in more than 32 countries around the world where Alcoa operates.
