Alcoa‘s mine rehabilitation has received international, national and state awards. The most significant being listed on the United Nation's Environment Programme Global 500 Roll of Honour in 1990. Alcoa is the only mining company to have received this honour.
In 1996 Alcoa received the World Environmental Centre Gold Medal for international corporate environmental achievement. Although awarded to our parent company, the citation refers specifically to achievements in Alcoa’s Western Australian operations, including bauxite mine rehabilitation and the Alcoa Landcare Project.
Alcoa was awarded the Society for Ecological Restoration International's Model Project Award in 2003, for outstanding contribution to the field of ecological restoration. The award was given for work in restoring the botanical richness of the jarrah forest after bauxite mining in Western Australia.
In 1996 Alcoa’s WA mining operations received a WA Department of Minerals and Energy Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence. This was awarded for integration of environmental considerations into mine planning and operations.
A special award was made by the Premier of Western Australia in 1998 to the Board of Alcoa in recognition of Alcoa’s support for programs to conserve threatened species in Western Australia.
In 2002, Alcoa was recognised with a Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence from the Western Australian government for our mine rehabilitation program
In 2008 the state government awarded Alcoa a Golden Gecko for the closure, decommissioning and rehabilitation of the Jarrahdale mine which operated from 1963 until 1998.
In addition Alcoa has won five national and state Greening Australia and Landcare Awards for support of environmental and conservation projects throughout regional Australia.
