Alcoa's Greenhouse Achievements
Alcoa's data shows the opposite. Since 1990 we've increased production of alumina and aluminium in Australia, and at the same time we've reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Aluminium production is up two percent. Alumina production is up 41 percent. But on a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) basis, our annual emissions of the six "Kyoto gases" are down by 165,000 tonnes.
Equally important, our contribution to Australia's economy continues to climb. In 1990 we added $1997 million to Australia's net balance of payments. Last year, that number was $2193 million (both amounts in 2000 dollars).
The emissions in smelting have dropped sharply, from 2.6 million tonnes to 1.1 million tonnes. This is largely due to implementing new procedures to control emissions of perfluorocarbons, a greenhouse gas produced during the smelting process.
Gas from power generation - both our own and purchased smelter power - has been held at just below 1990 levels by operational improvements.
Gas produced during refining is up in total, but has been reduced from .74kg per kilogram of alumina, to .69kg per kilogram.
