Gift timeline
2002 – National Gallery of Victoria Alcoa donated one of Sidney Nolan’s most ambitious and significant paintings, Landscape (Salt Lake) c.1966, to the National Gallery of Victoria. This work consists of four panels and is a dramatic example of Nolan’s outback landscape studies. For more, click here. 2005 – National Gallery of Australia, ACT Alcoa gifted six famous works to the National Gallery of Australia in 2005, including Jeffrey Smart's Waiting for the train c.1970 and Playground at Piraeus c.1970; Robert Juniper's Ferns and flowers c.1968; Ray Crooke's Ant hill country, Laura c.1969 and Landscape with rocks in the foreground c.1968 and Fred Williams' Landscape 1977. For more, click here. 2005 – National Portrait Gallery, ACT Sir Lindesay Clark, Sir James Forrest, and Sir Arvi Parbo were the founding fathers of Australia’s aluminium industry. To honour their contribution to Australia’s resources sector as successive Chairmen of Alcoa of Australia, their portraits were painted by some of Australia’s most well-known artists: Clifton Pugh, William Boissevain and Sir William Dargie respectively. After many years watching over their successors in the Alcoa boardroom, these three important portraits were donated to Australia’s National Portrait Gallery. For more, click here. 2006 – City of Portland, Victoria Separate to Alcoa’s art collection, the company has an extensive arts partnership portfolio, which includes Sculpture by the Sea in Western Australia and NSW, the Perth International Arts Festival and the Melbourne International Arts Festival. With Alcoa being a co-principal sponsor of Sculpture by the Sea, large aluminium sculptures from the open air exhibition have been acquired by Alcoa in recent years. Alcoa gifted the aluminium sculpture ‘The Spirit of the Albatross’ by renowned Australian sculptor Ron Gomboc to the City of Portland. For more, click here. 2008 – Town of Kwinana, WA In 2008, Alcoa presented the Town of Kwinana with the sculpture ‘time frame’ by WA artist Derek Roach. This was a sculpture acquired from Sculpture by the Sea and is now permanently displayed out the front of the Town’s offices for the whole community to enjoy.
2008 – Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, WA Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital (SCGH) in Perth received 36 artworks from Alcoa, including four pieces by well-known WA artists Elizabeth Durack and William Boissevain, valued at around $75,000 in December 2008. For more, click here. 2009 – City of Bunbury (Bunbury Regional Art Galleries), WA On 6 February 2009, the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries will formally accept from Alcoa 21 works, valued at nearly $400,000. The pieces include paintings by both Arthur Boyd and Arthur Boyd Senior, a sculpture by Guy Boyd, as well as works by Sidney Nolan, Ray Crooke and William Bossevain. For more, click here. 2009 – Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, WA The art which Alcoa has gifted to the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre will be unveiled to the community at a special celebration event on 18 February. The donation of an oil painting by Margaret Olley is valued at $90,000. For more, click here. 2009 – Melbourne Royal Women’s Hospital, Victoria 35 pieces of art valued at more than $80,000 including works from William Bossevain, Elizabeth Durack and Pro Hart were donated in 2009. 2009 – Geelong Gallery, Victoria Seven pieces of art to the value of more than $300,000, including works by Arthur Boyd, Ray Crooke and Charles Blackman, were donated to the Geelong Gallery. 2009 - Shire of Harvey, WA In 2009, Alcoa presented the community of Harvey with the aluminium sculpture ‘hardscape’ by WA based artist Noah Birch. This sculpture was acquired by Alcoa during Sculpture by the Sea 2009 and is now permanently displayed at the Harvey Dam look-out.
