Partnering Stronger Communities
Alcoa Anglesea and Point Henry’s partnerships can be formed under any of the five Partnering Stronger Communities pillars which are:
  • Safe and Healthy Children and Families
  • Future Leaders of Industry
  • Arts for Everyone
  • Conservation and Sustainability
  • Sustainable Communities

SAFE AND HEALTHY CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
The Safe and Healthy Children and Families pillar focuses on programs, activities and events that increase people’s ability to be safer, healthier and more active members of the community.

Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club
Alcoa Anglesea recognises the great service Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club provides the community by making the beach experience for local families and tourists a safer one.

Community organisations and facilities are vital to the strength of small communities like Anglesea and Alcoa wants to see institutions like the Surf Life Saving Club continue to grow and prosper, while encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle.

With the ocean being such a major part of the lifestyle in Anglesea it is critical that people are able to enjoy the water safely and Alcoa Anglesea is proud to support the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club - a partnership which has spanned over 40 years.

Kids Foundation
The KIDS Foundation and Alcoa of Australia share a common goal in injury prevention and both hold safety as a core value.

The KIDS Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to childhood injury prevention and recovery including delivering quality safety education programs and services in schools.

The partnership between KIDS Foundation, Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa in Australia began in 2005 and supports KIDS Foundation’s nationally recognised KIDS Safety Club school safety program, Safety 4 KIDS on-site program, Injury Free Day, Camp Phoenix and Charity Challenge.

Anglesea's Safety 4 KIDS program is a key feature of the KIDS Foundation partnership.  For every recordable injury free week achieved at Anglesea, $100 is donated to the KIDS Foundation. If the site achieves an injury free year (which was achieved in 2006 and 2007) this total is doubled. Each year the money raised goes towards Camp Phoenix – an annual retreat for burns survivors and their families to get together and have some fun. In August 2008, 10 Alcoa employees from Anglesea and Point Henry volunteered their time as leaders on the camp in Queensland.

The partnership has helped shape the success of both Alcoa’s internal safety drive and KIDS Foundation’s community safety outreach programs in schools across Australia, and its vital work helping burns and injury survivors.

FUTURE LEADERS OF INDUSTRY
The Future Leaders of Industry pillar ensures that young people in regional communities have access to the development opportunities they need to become leaders. This strengthens communities and businesses such as Alcoa, enabling them to employ skilled young people who are ready to add value.

Geelong Regional Vocational Education Council (GRVEC)
Alcoa Anglesea and Point Henry and the Geelong Regional Vocational Educational Council formed a partnership in 1999 to provide local students interested in the manufacturing industry with training, scholarship and work placement opportunities.

The Alcoa/GRVEC partnership supports the implementation of the Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) program in the Geelong region as well as the Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry Scholarships in Manufacturing program.

With support from the Geelong Manufacturing Council, Alcoa and GRVEC introduced the Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry Program in 2006. The Alcoa Future Leaders of Industry Program aims to encourage young people to consider a career path in manufacturing and to follow a study path that will make them eligible for job selection.

ARTS FOR EVERYONE
Arts for Everyone contributes to Alcoa’s commitment to supporting rich and diverse workforces and communities. This partnership pillar aims to encourage young people to engage in arts and music by supporting exhibitions, performances, workshops and training opportunities.

Anglesea Performing Arts Inc.
Alcoa Anglesea has been a proud supporter of the Anglesea Performing Arts’ One Act Play Festival for a number of years. This group originally provided light entertainment and musicals but in recent years has moved to more contemporary productions using ensemble casts. Alcoa Anglesea is pleased in helping the company develop the skills of actors while challenging their audiences with creative interpretations of contemporary issues.

ANGAIR Wildflower and Art Show
Alcoa Anglesea regularly partners the Anglesea Aireys Inlet Society for the Protection of Flora and Fauna (ANGAIR). The ANGAIR Wildflower and Art Show helps educate the community about the important local flora and fauna, and raises awareness of the conservation activities in the Anglesea and Aireys Inlet region.

Alcoa Anglesea partnership encourages artists to produce work depicting these subjects, promoting knowledge and appreciation in the wider community of local Australian flora and fauna, and the natural beauty of the landscape.

Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC)
The Alcoa/GPAC relationship began with Alcoa’s original donation in 1977 that helped to build the arts complex.

The Alcoa Theatre Season is an exciting and exhilarating year of entertaining and thought provoking shows including nine diverse, high quality theatre productions from some of the country's most renowned companies.

Through the Alcoa Education Program  our continuing partnership ensures that students from the Barwon and South West region have the opportunity to become engaged in the arts.  A highlight of the Education Program is the Poppykettle Festival, dedicated to promoting and celebrating performing arts for children, young people and families.

CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY
The Conservation and Environment pillar further demonstrates Alcoa’s commitment to environmental issues, through active partnerships in the local community.

Anglesea CFA
Alcoa has been a partner of the Anglesea CFA for over 40 years with Alcoa first sponsoring the brigade at Pt Henry before the Anglesea operations began. In that time the CFA and Alcoa Anglesea have shared emergency response training exercises and resources, worked together on local issues and developed the CFA’s resources to ensure they are in a good position to defend the Anglesea township against the threat of fire and to act in emergencies.

The brigade is involved in a number of activities within the local community. Fire and emergency activities include: attending and fighting fires; attending road accidents & chemical spills; conducting fuel reduction burns; assisting other agencies at incidents.

Some of the non fire fighting activities include: educating the community about fire safety; assisting business and house holders prepare emergency evacuation strategies; managing community fire risks; maintaining fire equipment; supporting the community with Juniors and brigades in schools programs.

Barwon Water
In 2004 Alcoa Anglesea and Point Henry formed a partnership with Barwon Water to develop and implement a Water Management Action Plan. The plant wide initiative included a review of current water consumption, developed a coordinated approach to raising awareness, improved water management procedures, investigated alternative water sources and initiated strategies focused on water conservation.

In 2007, Alcoa, the Alcoa Foundation and Barwon Water commenced a new partnership aimed at sustainable water use, under the banner of the ‘Alcoa Water Conservation Fund’.  Sustainable water use is a key goal for Alcoa, Barwon Water and the drought affected greater Geelong community. Alcoa and Barwon Water have worked together to deliver a greater level of water supply security and sustainability for the community’s assets through innovative recycled water projects and facilities.

Two recent projects include the installation of wastewater recapture project at Barwon Health facilities along with the upgrade of existing irrigation infrastructure at selected local sporting grounds. In 2008, a 2.5km pipeline was turned on linking Connewarre Reserve with Class C recycled water from the Black Rock water reclamation plant.  The reserve is a valuable community resource and will now be protected using the recycled water in the face of drought conditions. This will ensure that the ground can continue to accommodate local cricket, football and soccer training and competition. Read more...

Parks Victoria
Alcoa has a unique agreement with Parks Victoria which allows government and industry to jointly manage and protect the Anglesea Heath non-mining part of Alcoa Anglesea’s lease and ensures that this important area is protected.

It is the first case in Australia where a conservation agency and a mining company have come together to form a cooperative partnership to manage an area for biodiversity conservation.
The Anglesea Heath is one of the most diverse and spectacular areas for flora, fauna, scenery and wildlife in Victoria, with approximately one quarter of the total Victorian flora existing within a relatively small area.

Parks Victoria, Alcoa Anglesea and the local community have shown a strong interest in the Anglesea Heath and their commitment was the key behind the Anglesea Heath Cooperative Agreement and Management Plan, which was published in November 2002.
As well as employing an Environmental Scientist, Alcoa Anglesea also funds a Parks Victoria Ranger to implement the strategies and actions of this Management Plan, including the protection of threatened species, track rationalisation and rehabilitation.

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
This pillar demonstrates Alcoa's commitment to the communities in which we operate. Sustainable Communities will see Alcoa partner with local community groups in a way that allows each group, the wider community and our business to become stronger.

Anglesea Primary School
Alcoa's long standing partnership with Anglesea Primary School has positioned the company as a positive contributor to the long term sustainability of its local communities.

Alcoa Anglesea supports the Primary School in giving its children the best academic and emotional start to their education to build resilience in these children and produce an active and contributing next generation for the town.

An example of where Alcoa Anglesea has supported the school is the student Wellbeing Program which aims to identify and assist “at-risk” children to enable them to achieve the best learning and life outcomes they can. The Program will help to continue and grow a vital and respected community resource (the school) for the local community.

Alcoa Anglesea also assisted Anglesea Primary School to be more waste wise by providing recycling bins to the school. At the same time, the plant has helped the school cut costs that allows it to sustain its waste minimisation efforts into the future by developing a waste collection system that is similar to that used with great success at the Anglesea plant.

Alcoa is a Premier Supporter of United Way and has a broad partnership with Geelong's largest charitable organisation.
Alcoa makes an annual corporate donation to United Way and is the naming rights sponsor of the Alcoa Australian Head of the River.
