Environment

Alcoa Anglesea occupies approximately seven percent of the 7221 hectares of a mining lease known as the Anglesea Heath and operates at world class efficiency levels for brown coal fired power stations.

Through the commitment of our people, use of technology, monitoring programs, and air, water, waste and land management initiatives, Alcoa Anglesea is highly regarded for its commitment to the environment.

Alcoa Anglesea is ISO14001 certified and operates under the strict requirements of a Victorian Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Licence and all emissions - including solids, air and liquids - are reported to the Commonwealth Department of Environment and can be found at www.npi.gov.au.

Recent environmental successes include:
  • 50% reduction in town water use since 2000
  • 50% reduction in solid waste going to landfill since 2000
  • 2005 State Government Strzelecki Highly Commended Award for Management  of the Natural Environment for our mine rehabilitation work
  • 2006 nomination for a World Environment Day Award

Caring for the well-being of the Anglesea Heath and the environment in general is of the highest priority for Alcoa and drives every one of our activities and decisions. We will not put profit or production before the environment, health and safety.
