Alcoa of Australia and the US-based Alcoa Foundation have a long history of supporting local Anglesea organisations and are proud to continue supporting worthwhile causes that make the community stronger.
Since 1969, Alcoa’s Partnering Stronger Communities program has included community partnerships, grants, employee donations and employee volunteering.
In August 2015, Alcoa of Australia Chairman and Managing Director and Alcoa Foundation board member Alan Cransberg announced that the Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa of Australia would grant $225,000 to 14 organisations in Anglesea to help underline Alcoa's proud history and support local organisations transition to a future without Alcoa.
Organisations who received grants included a range of long term partners:
Anglesea Primary School $US50,000
This grant will fund the ‘Alcoa STEM to the Future’ initiative. The overall goal is to improve individual student achievement in Science, Math and Technology by at least five per cent annually over three years. This will help students develop a lifelong interest in science, technology, engineering and maths and gain skills so they are more inclined to pursue careers in these fields. The grant will enable the introduction of innovative learning programs, teachers' professional development and the purchase of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) related equipment and resources at the school.
Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club $40,000
This grant will fund the purchase of a replacement 4 x 4 patrol vehicle. The new vehicle will allow the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club to reliably and safely continue its beach patrol activities over the summer months when some 100,000 beach goers and holiday makers descend on the Anglesea community. The Club members are on call 24/7 to respond and assist with emergency rescues or incidents along the Anglesea and surrounding coast.
Anglesea Fire Brigade $25,000
This grant will fund a Thermal Imaging Camera which will enhance the operational response by the Brigade. It will enable fire fighters to pinpoint fire activity and/or sources of heat in structure fires such as homes and buildings, bushfires and car fires, while also having the ability to locate missing persons in hard to access areas. The camera will be available for use into neighbouring brigade response areas, thus becoming a valuable resource, not only to Anglesea, but also the greater coastal group catchment area.
Anglesea Football and Netball Clubs, $30,000
Alcoa will continue as the ground naming rights sponsor for the next two seasons, with a grant of $20,000 and a further grant of $10,000 to support the Netball Club's programs and activities. The funding will ensure the Club can maintain the excellent standard of football and netball clubrooms, gymnasium and social facilities developed over previous years, and meet the requirements of affiliating the five junior football and seven junior netball teams over the next two seasons.
The grant will fund the building of a new shed and greenhouse for propagation activities, along with the development of display boards for the annual Wildflower Show and other community events that highlight the importance of the Anglesea Heath, and Alcoa and other stakeholders’ contributions to the conservation and protection of the Heath.
Anglesea Bowling Club, $15,000
The grant will enable the club to install safe and secure fencing around its perimeter, as well as continuing to promote and present a high standard lawn bowls competition, the Anglesea Fours, for the next three seasons.
In addition, the following organisations shared in a total of $25,000 in grants from Alcoa of Australia: Anglesea & District Men’s Shed, Anglesea Lions Club, The Lodge of the Great Ocean Road, Anglesea & Aireys Inlet Foodlink, Anglesea & District Historical Society, Eumeralla Scout Camp and Anglesea Performing Arts.
