Sustainability
Mining and Land Restoration A team of environmental researchers is dedicated to developing initiatives to improve the management of mining and land restoration. This involves many environmental research projects with key stakeholders from State Government departments, including the Department of Environment and Conservation, the Water Corporation and Department of Water. Alcoa has also been at the forefront of dieback research and development for more than 25 years. Alcoa and DeC (formerly Conservation and Land Management – CALM) pioneered the development of dieback management procedures to protect healthy jarrah forest against dieback and improve conservation values of forest severely affected by dieback. Greenhouse gas reductions Alcoa has taken a voluntary global leadership position to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We have partnered with Alinta Limited to develop a greenhouse-friendly cogeneration power unit at the proposed Wagerup Unit Three expansion. Residue Planning Alcoa has reviewed its long term residue management strategy and is looking at how the residue plan can be brought forward to improve our planning in this area, in line with the proposed Wagerup Unit Three expansion. Sustainability in permitting Alcoa is working towards undertaking studies to meet the environmental conditions, working closely with the DEC – to ensure we can meet our commitments.
