Portland Aluminium Community Partnerships

It is our aim to ensure the communities where Alcoa operates have networks that create opportunities for people, institutions and business to participate more fully in the economic, social and cultural areas of that community. Stronger communities lead to the development of productive partnerships, the integration and coordination of services, local solutions to local problems and to the creation of a more positive future.

The Partnering Stronger Community program works by:

• Helping communities to find solutions through joint projects.
• Providing in kind support and volunteers rather than simply offering financial support.
• Focusing on a shared commitment to making local communities stronger and a better place to live and work.

Application Process

Any organisation applying for funds from Portland Aluminium must complete a Partnership Application Form, which can be downloaded from this page. Partnerships are reviewed every three months only, therefore, it is imperative applications are submitted early to avoid disappointment. Applications are reviewed in January, April, July and October each year. To ensure your submission is reviewed you will need to submit your application form by the end of the month preceding the next review meeting.

All decisions on partnerships are made by the Portland Aluminium Community Support (PACS) group. PACS is a diverse team of employees – including operators, union officials and management – who are involved in or have a keen interest in the community.

Safe and Healthy Children and Families

This field reflects Portland Aluminium’s commitment to Health and Safety and focuses on programs, activities and events that increase people’s ability to be safer, healthier and more active members of the community.

Portland Aluminium has supported United Way Glenelg, a charitable organisation that raises funds for health and human care initiatives within the region, since United Way set up in Portland in 1999. In addition, Portland Aluminium employees contribute to United Way through payroll deductions and a number of employees are members of the United Way Glenelg Board.

Arts for Life

Arts for Life contributes to Portland Aluminium’s commitment to supporting rich and diverse workplaces and communities, while encouraging young people to engage in arts and music by supporting exhibitions, performances, workshops and training opportunities.

Conservation and Environment

This field further demonstrates Portland Aluminium’s commitment to environmental issues, through active partnerships in the local community.

For many years Portland Aluminium has been a strong supporter of environmental education. Programs have included the development of environmental education units for school students and, with the help of local partners, activities such as World Environment Day and National Tree Day, and resources such as the Environmental Education in the South West Resource Kit.

Sustainable Communities

This field demonstrates our commitment to the communities where we operate. Sustainable Communities will see Portland Aluminium partner with local community groups in a way that allows each group, the wider community and our business to grow.

Volunteer for Life

The Volunteer for Life field centres on Portland Aluminium employees’ volunteering efforts with community organisations. Through programs such as ACTION and Bravo!, Portland Aluminium and our employees are supporting the organisations that make our communities stronger and more sustainable. In 2004 alone, approximately $50,000 was provided to Portland and district community not-for-profit organisations through employee volunteering.
