Scitech Maths Enrichment Program

Alcoa has teamed up with Scitech to deliver the Maths Enrichment Program to year 4 and 5 students in Western Australia. The program encourages students to problem solve and think creatively with mathematical reasoning, as well helps teachers develop a more confident approach in the delivery of maths.

This three year partnership which runs through to November 2015 includes 2013, which is the International Year of Mathematics.

Through practical lessons students are shown the relevance of maths in everyday life. For example, students are tasked with pretending to care for a rescued joey. They have to work in groups to figure out the type of kangaroo, calculate how much milk it needs to drink and the approximate age by measuring the tail or paw.

Another example involves relating maths to everyday sporting activities. Activities include measuring the best angle to throw a ball to achieve the greatest distance and analysing how a different walking pace changes the distance covered over time.

The program assists teachers by identifying and addressing the fact that often they lack confidence in their own understanding of higher order mathematics. It also addresses the difficulties they face in locating appropriate mathematical enrichment resources and effectively integrating enrichment activities with standard classroom teaching practices.

Scitech program coordinator Madeline Blundell-Williams said mathematics played such an important role in our lives but often it was met with trepidation.

“Teachers are often unsure how to teach it and make learning the basic maths concepts attractive to children. To address this, we work closely alongside the teachers and students to give them the tools, support and advice,” Madeline said.
